Substance abuse is viewed as a disorder of the young. Substance abuse among older adults is often ignored or even denied by family members and health care workers. When speaking of an aging parent's use of alcohol and medications, many people commonly mistake addiction for pleasure. In older adult, alcohol may be used by the elderly to soothe feelings of isolation and loneliness. In addition, it may be a way to numb the grief from a spouse's death, physical pain or limitations, fear of dying, or stress associated with increasing financial burdens caused by a growing need for medical services.
The elderly are more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, because their systems do not detoxify and excrete as efficiently as do those of younger people. Alcohol abuse in older adults should be diagnosed and effectively treated to decrease mortality and morbidity. For older adult, inpatient treatment is often a better choice to help them on alcohol addiction problem.

Preventing drug use among children and adolescents
The United States continues to have the highest rate of teenage drug use of any nation in the industrialized world. To reduce the rate of teenage drug use and prevent American youth from using dangerous drugs we should combining broadcast media and parent education. Parents can be influential by talking to their children about the dangers in using drugs, and remain actively engaged in their children's live.
Another strategy for preventing drug abuse involves school-based curricula. Education for drug abuse prevention should be seen to include both formal and informal health curricula, the creation of a safe and healthy school environment, the provision of appropriate health services and support as well as the involvement of the family and the community in the planning and delivery of programs.

Video games addiction
Playing video games is mainly a children's and young men's culture. Nearly a third of the top video games contain violent content. One of important negative effect of computer games that has been increasingly discussed in recent years is game addiction. Video game addiction is the use of computers and video games to change an individual's mood.
Although video-game addiction can be a problem for both boys and girls, it is much more common in boys than in girls. As serious as video game addiction is, I caution parents not to overreact just because their children seem to be playing video games a lot. You can prevent video games from becoming a problem for your child by limiting their use in your household and being conscious of what types of games your child is playing.

Alcohol and young people
Alcohol consumption is a fact of life for young people in many parts of the world. Children and young people are born into a world where drinking alcohol is seen as both a pleasure and a danger. Alcohol consumption by young people periodically becomes the focus for public concern and mass media attention. On average, young people first try alcohol at twelve years of age.
Young people who drink too much not only put their own health at risk, but are more likely to get involved in anti-social behavior and contribute to insecurity on our streets. Young people who use alcohol regularly are more often involved in offending behavior than the others.
Various steps to control alcohol use among the young adult population are underway in the United States, including provide factual information concerning harmful effects of alcohol, help young people cope with emotions, and improve poor life skills.

Alcohol addiction and pregnancy
Alcohol is the substance most commonly abused by women. Drinking alcohol in pregnancy deserves special attention because of the concern for the health of the unborn child. One possible consequence of alcohol use during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), one of the more common types of mental retardation occurring in newborns.
Alcohol addiction also causes severe medical problems to the fetus. The medical problems include permanent damage to the unborn child, lower birth weight of the child, withdrawal in the child, and all of the problems associated with lack of prenatal care.
Newborn infants who have been exposed to alcohol during fetal life may be much more vulnerable to adverse environmental factors than other babies, which means that they should be taken care of under the best possible psychosocial stress. It is clear that this is a major public health problem, particularly when we consider also the impact of exposure on the large number of children whose defects are milder.

Addiction Treatment
/ Find Addiction Counselor
Find Addiction Counselor
The primary goal of addiction treatment is to eliminate addictive behaviors. Patients with substance abuse or addiction problems should find addiction counselor immediately. The counselor's goal is to show recovering addicts that they can feel good and enjoy life in far less self-destructive ways. Addiction counseling may be individual, group or a combination.
There are many addiction counselors available out there. Look for counselors who have designations "CADC,""CSAC,""CAC," or "MAC" after their names. The best source for a good counselor is probably referrals from friends who have seen a counselor and can tell you firsthand that he or she is competent, friendly, and effective. A good counselor can be your best friend both in making the decision to kick your addiction and in staying addiction-free.
